It does have an old nvidia card (circa 2001). I'll try the boot option.
If that were to work, but the winxp didn't boot, that would mean ...?

I don't get "Soft lockup," it just freezes at the

eth0: Host error, FIFO diagnostic register 8000.
eth0: PCI bus error, bus status 800000a0

message.
