I tried to install Ubuntu GNU/Linux on my brand new computer (not laptop) and ran into a problem similar to the one described here: my sata hdd was not detected.
I use a VIA VT6420 SATA RAID Controller with the RAID option disabled in the BIOS (thus selecting SATA).
I think the problem is related to bug 7415 of linux: http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7415
There is stated that the bug is fixed in version 2.6.20.1 of linux. Ubuntu 6.10 livecd is running with a 2.6.17 kernel.
So, I am afraid this 'ancient bug' isn't fixed yet :-(
