When I reinstalled this morning, I forgot to enable the restricted driver. Having followed dg's procedure, I expect I installed it anyway (with the patch), but I thought it worth mentioning. At any rate, after the failure/regression, I attempted to use the "normal" restricted driver via System, Administration, Hardware drivers. That seemed to work, but it does mean I am no longer sure which driver I am using.
One thing that is interesting: Yesterday, with a clean install brought up to date and Intrepid backports and proposed enabled and installed, I could turn off the internal Broadcom with the DELL WiFi switch, insert the RetailPlus USB adapter, and get WiFi that way.
Now, with a clean up to date Intrepid, no backports or proposed, WiFi is disabled unless the DELL switch is on. Refer to the attached screen shot ("shot").
More details and uh, possible user error.
