Bug Description

On a dell Inspiron 1420 with the nvidia 8400M GS, when installing the binary nvidia drivers my system display stopped working. I was able to boot into the recovery kernel though. I did a reinstall downloaded the NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-100.14.09-pkg2.run file off of nvidia's site, downloaded and configured the kernel source, and had the nvidia software build the driver. This worked out well.

lspci:
lspci | grep -i nvidia

cat /proc/driver/nvidia/version
NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 100.14.09 Sat May 26 00:43:07 PDT 2007
GCC version: gcc version 4.1.3 20070718 (prerelease) (Ubuntu 4.1.2-14ubuntu1)

email me if you have any questions, thanks

Thanks for your bug report.

I am not sure I follow. Are you saying that the Ubuntu packaged NVIDIA binary driver locked up your system whereas 100.14.09 from the NVIDIA website did not?

Additionally, we need to know what version of Ubuntu you are running along with where and how you are installing the NVIDIA binary drivers. The 8400M GS does not supported by NVIDIA binary drivers shipped with Feisty (see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia and ) so further clarification would be useful.

I'm running Gusty, I'm trying to trace down issues I have. I had more
problems on Feisty so, I decided to go with the alpha release. It looks
like I'm experiencing two seperate issues, sound doesn't work and hardware
acceleration doesn't work either. I was able to install the nvidia binary
to correct the video problem but, I'm still at a loss with the sound issue

I'm starting to get somewhere, my system is starting to work :)
The nvidia-glx, nvidia-glx-legacy , and nvidia-glx-new don't set up my nvidia card properly. Only having the kernel source build with options allows the driver to be built on my machine. I have attached the nvidia installer log. Please contact me if you have any more questions.

Support for the 8400M GS was only added to the nv driver a few weeks ago (see http://gitweb.freedesktop.org/?p=xorg/driver/xf86-video-nv.git;a=commit;h=d0d4e37accc697108e03c2ee7fdc0edf1f309620 ). Graphics cards that are "new" (less than 9 months old) tend to be poorly supported by already released Linux distributions (apart from Intel graphics cards as Intel release drivers for their cards BEFORE the hardware reaches retail)...

another2:
Bug reports can only be about a single issue. Is this about the lack of open source nv support for your card OR the lack of binary driver support? If this is about lack of binary driver support in Gutsy then this is effectively a duplicate of Bug #120943 .

(The sound problem is a separate issue again. I have a feeling that it is has already been filed in another bug report perhaps by yourself. If it wasn't you who filed it then it is probably a good idea to search launchpad for a recent bug to do with nvidia sound and add yourself to the subscriber list)

nv works great, this is a lack of binary support. I didn't see it in the
list apparently.

According to http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/100.14.11/README/appendix-a.html 100.14.11 (as you have mentioned) supports your card so this is effectively a request for 100.14.11 to be available. Closing as a duplicate of Bug #120943.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This particular bug has already been reported and is a duplicate of bug Bug #120943 and is being marked as such.
