nvidia binary locks up system with an NVIDIA 8400M GS card

Bug Description
On a dell Inspiron 1420 with the nvidia 8400M GS, when installing the binary nvidia drivers my system display stopped working. I was able to boot into the recovery kernel though. I did a reinstall downloaded the NVIDIA-

I am not sure I follow. Are you saying that the Ubuntu packaged NVIDIA binary driver locked up your system whereas 100.14.09 from the NVIDIA website did not?
