Bug Description

When installing ubuntu or running the live edition from CD the wireless card reports as "Firmware Missing". During the installation process it will detect the card as a Wireless Network to select (odd). This could cause confusion for in-experienced computer users who won't understand what they are seeing. If you are installing on a laptop your first inclination is to use wireless so this missing feature problematic.

Broadcom firmware depends on a number of different factors. Maybe your card requires the proprietary broadcom driver, which we can't ship with the CD?

While doing the installation, have you clicked "Install third-party software" on the first or second screen of the installer? This would enable downloading the driver from the Internet, which however will obviously require a wired connection.

linux-firmware itself ships some firmware for the broadcom devices already.

If you could please run 'apport-collect 985968' from the system which is experiencing this issue it would help a lot in debugging.

Thanks!

I'll run that tonight when I get home. Also there is another bug #985965 which relates to Additional Drivers doesn't find the Broadcom wireless drivers when connected to the internet with an ethernet cord.

Changed in linux-firmware (Ubuntu):

The trouble is I get the freeze before the install 3rd party software screen I get a freeze on the splash screen and after 3 days of testing different F6 perameters I see it is a missing firmware issue even though the laptop currently has the firmware ionstalled and wireless works with 11.10. I don't know how to install firmware from the live CD.

The freeze due to missing firmware is a bug. We have a fix, see bug #950295.
