This sounds as if there is something in your user directory which has been messed up.

Can you please chown your home directory recursively, to make sure you are the owner of all the files and directories, and let us know if it makes a difference. Assuming your username is "mike", this is the command I suggest that you run:

sudo chown -R mike:mike /home/mike
