Bug Description

If I log in as Guest or root, I can get into the account. However, if I use my normal user account, I just get returned to the login screen. If I use gdm as my desktop manager, I can get to my user account.

This sounds as if there is something in your user directory which has been messed up.

Can you please chown your home directory recursively, to make sure you are the owner of all the files and directories, and let us know if it makes a difference. Assuming your username is "mike", this is the command I suggest that you run:

sudo chown -R mike:mike /home/mike

@gunnarhj thanks for the suggestion but after implementing your suggestion, the bug's still there.

Well, if you can start a guest session, the problem probably lies somewhere in your user directory. I think we'd need to see a couple of log files:

cat ~/.xsession-errors
sudo cat /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log

@gunnarhj I tried this. I'm getting the following output:

"cat: /root/.xsession-errors: No such file or directory"

"sudo cat /var/log/lightdm/lightdm/lightdm.log" executed but problem persists

I meant that you would copy the output from those commands, and post it here.

Since you apparently are logged in as root, you need a slightly different command for .xsession-errors. If your username is abby, it would be:

cat /home/abby/.xsession-errors

and probably also

cat /home/abby/.xsession-errors.old

Please note that you need to do this instantly after a failed attempt to log in as your user.

Okay, from root, how do I copy n post the output here?

One way is to save the contents in some files using these commands:

cat /home/abby/.xsession-errors > /var/tmp/errors.txt

cat /home/abby/.xsession-errors.old > /var/tmp/errors.old.txt

sudo cat /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log > /var/tmp/lightdm.log.txt

Then start a guest session and do it from there.

So, I tried that and now my bug has gotten worse. I can't even get to login screen

Sorry to hear that, Abby - your installation seems to be in a bad shape. You probably need some support on how to fix your Ubuntu installation, and since this is a bug report, it's not the right place for doing that. We haven't even confirmed yet that there is a bug.

I would suggest that you seek help at e.g. http://askubuntu.com/
