Sorry to revive this topic, but I see this lack of contrast as a major usability issue with the "legacy" scrollbars. Any progress (or attention) on this would be great :)

I accidentally came up with a scrollbar that contrasts while still fitting Ambiance very well (better than default, imo). See my post here: http://askubuntu.com/a/114018/46882
