Also, I have deleted the ~/.gconf/system.bak, so I do not have a means to recreate the problem. I apologize for not keeping it for diagnostic reasons. I also checked the Synaptic Package Manager and found no extra proxy configurations or settings as compared against my desktop. The desktop is a more recent installation, but had it since before December 2008.
