Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

The status bar message in Nautilus incorrectly informs the user that a file will be moved when "Copy" is selected.

To replicate:
1. Open Nautilus in any folder.
2. Press Control+C or right click on any file/folder and select "Copy".

Expected: The status bar message reads: "<item> will be copied when you select the Paste command"
Actual: The status bar message reads: "<item> will be moved when you select the Paste command"

This is clearly incorrect since subsequently selecting Paste does not move the item, but copies it, as would be expected.

Thanks for your report, Which version of Ubuntu are you running? Are you trying to copy that file from another partition? That works fine in my desktop, not confirming for now.

My apologies - I'm running Feisty AMD64 with kernel 2.6.20-16-generic. Nautilus version is 2.18.1.

I can definitely replicate this on any partition. I have two drives in my system - my Linux drive and an NTFS drive. In either case, if I open a Nautilus window in any folder on either of those drives and select copy, the status bar immediately changes to that incorrect message.

Tried this on the released version of Gutsy today - still able to replicate. Very strange!

My mistake - I rebooted Ubuntu Hardy Alpha 3, and now the status bar says "will be moved" even when selecting copy. I think that this is due to a problem with the locale? I opened up Language Support to check that the Australian locale was selected - and it looks as if this then triggered the problem again.

This is really sad considering I already went to all the trouble of fixing the translation on launchpad. Aren't these translations being uploaded periodically? Three releases have gone by since I did the fix!

Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. Unfortunately a paper cut should be a small usability issue that affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. I'm afraid this bug can't be addressed as part of this project because it only affects users in Australia. Please don't worry, though, this is such an easy issue to fix, I am sure we can get it the attention it deserves and have it fixed for Karmic.

I'm not affected by this bug (using US locale), but I really wonder how is it even possible that a small language fix hasn't been included in an official release for a year and a half?
There isn't anger in my question, I just don't understand the mechanism ;-)

I have just gone into https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/maverick/+source/nautilus/+pots/nautilus/en_AU/+translate and updated string #735 to make it state copied instead of moved.

From the comments here I think this has been done before but not committed. I will mark this as "in progress" as we are working on it but leave it open to make sure it does actually change and doesn't revert to stating moved at a later date.

Sorry for reviving what is an old bug but I was just going through and cleaning up the en-AU bugs.

I am marking this bug as closed. It is fixed in my updated 10.04 LTS and I have confirmed in 11.04 that the status bar message now reads "Prepares the selected files to be copied with a Paste command". If anyone is still finding this bug I would suggest updating the installation and opening another bug if this reappears again in future.
