And after some Googling I have found the following workaround. Not an ideal solution, by any means, but it saves me a lot of trouble.
In the file kdmrc, which under 8.10 is found in /etc/kde4/kdm/, uncomment the following line:
#TerminateServer=true
This will cause kdm to restart (and restart X also, I think) on logout, which keeps you from having to restart it manually.
