Funny resolution with kdm is just caused by xorg.conf listing screen modes in the wrong order.
For what concerns the possibility of using nvidia-glx rather than nvidia-glx-new as in the previous post, note that I am experiencing the bug, precisely with nvidia-glx. Indeed I have a geoforce 2 that is not supported by the nvidia-glx-new module.
Yet, the bug effectively disappears with nvidia-glx-legacy.
