the solution sugggested there is to clear the contents of ~/.cache/ and to check if there is sufficient free space. Just did that, and it seems to have fixed the problem atleast for now - will wait and see if it crashes again.
I suspect it affects folks who have upgraded from older versions and possibly have a corrupted cache as a result - I have also upgraded
