I have the same issue than Michale Neuffer and initramfs-tools (0.98.8ubuntu3) doesn't resolve the issue.
This regression occur with :

ii plymouth 0.8.2-2ubuntu22
linux-image-2.6.38-8-generic 2.6.38-8.42

Is there a way to disable properly plymouth from initramfs?
