Bug Description

upgrading to Ubuntu 13.04, there also appeared to be a low disk space- I assume it was a partition that ran out of space, as I have over 100GB free

On a 13.04 install, apt-get crashed during a dist-update. Now, apt-get says 3 updates failed to install, namely
linux-image-extra-3.8.0-25-generic
linux-image-generic
linux-generic

(exact error message at end.)

doing a df -h, I see my boot partition is at 96% capacity:

This reminds me of bugs past, where you guys resolved to clear out old kernel version from boot so this wouldn't happen. I thought that a fix was pushed into 13.04/12.04.2

I do not use aptitude, and do not have unattended-upgrades installed.

at this point, I get a system error on boot, and just need to fix it... I
cleaned up /boot it had no space left.
I need to improve my boot maintenance.

here is the output after cleanup:

How did you clean it up, by removing files or using apt-get to remove old
packages?

We needed the output before any cleanup, to know what was filling it. Was
it old kernel images?

If your system now works you can mark this report as invalid. Otherwise we
will need precise information to recreate the problem.

I cleaned it up using the following:
dpkg -l linux-* | awk '/^ii/{ print $2}' | grep -v -e `uname -r | cut -f1,2
-d"-"` | grep -e [0-9] | xargs sudo apt-get -y purge

I donn't have the output before cleanup, but I can tell you it was a bunch
of old kernel images.

my system works, but I'm getting a "System Error" message on bootup,
would a re-install or repair from 13.04 disk fix this?

Thanks,

Gary

Hey there,

I think I have the same error. I am on an Dell xps13 with a hard drive about 20% full. I was automatically directed to this bug report after a gui upgrade reported that something (don't remember the exact words!) had gone wrong in the update.

I then rebooted and did an 'ls -lR /boot' and a 'sudo aptitude-upgrade'

"
Errors were encountered while processing:
 linux-image-extra-3.8.0-25-generic
 linux-image-generic
 linux-generic
"

I do NOT appear to have any 'system errors' on boot like Gary.

Let me know if can provide anything more!

Michael

I had a very similar problem. I solved it with the help from this post:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/38083/initramfs-problem-when-out-of-disk-space

my /boot partition was almost full (it is 228MB) - so I uninstalled three previous versions of the kernel - and then the install succeeded.

As you are using aptitude to upgrade old kernel images will not be
automatically removed (bug #923876). Those should be removed manually
to free up the space.

In previous versions old kernal images would not be subject to
automatical removal by default, that was changed recently. It is
possible that these old kernal images were installed before the
change, and as such required to be cleaned up manually. That being
the case the issue should not recur, and please let us know if it does
so that we can track down the cause.

You should seek support on an appropriate forum. See

 status invalid

As said, please reopen if the problem recurs and we can attempt to
track it down. Remember to obtain the requested information before
you repair the system.

I did on 2 Notebooks, both HP, not the same, install the same package with one small difference, making this problems in one case in the other not. And this only by second time being more diligent and refusing EULA, because I try to avoid Microsoft personally as best as I can.
In Synaptic Package Manager:
First Laptop HP, and installation of ubuntu-restricted-extras with accepted EULA did went well.
Second Laptop, installation ubuntu-restricted-extras and denied EULA, and exactly this problem here arose, which we hopefully speak about. Either or, EULA is Microsoft, and when Ubuntu risques double work, including Microsoft, I never expect that this is easy. I love Linux the more now.

It has unfortunately taken most of my evening, getting to the source of this problem.

Now got to follow instructions to remove discarded kernel images, I doubt I will be getting out to play tonight.

Here's the kernel images Xubuntu has put in my /boot partition:

ii linux-image-3.5.0-28-generic 3.5.0-28.48 amd64 Linux kernel image for version 3.5.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP
ii linux-image-3.8.0-21-generic 3.8.0-21.32 amd64 Linux kernel image for version 3.8.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP

ii linux-image-extra-3.8.0-23-generic 3.8.0-23.34 amd64 Linux kernel image for version 3.8.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP

This is a real headache for a numpty user like me. Like, wtf?

It transpires that my machine is using: 3.8.0-25-generic

To confuse matters, the kernel images include apparently more recent images: 3.5.0-28-generic ..

So if I delete the '-28' images, will it cause a problem? < This is a rhetorical question. I'm not here for support. I'm here on my hands and knees begging that this error be taken seriously. It keeps recurring. One of these days I'm going to delete the wrong kernel image and it'll all go up the swanny. I am not a computer administrator. I am a *user*. Should even a computer administrator have to undertake this pointless janitorial exercise every few weeks?

Technically, that's the older kernel from Ubuntu 12.10; note the 3.5, vs 3.8 for others.

Regarding your rhetorical part, we should also complain here:

No, that is a feature request which is already implemented. Any
person who believes it is not working for them should file a _new_
report, and specific cases will be investigated. Note that you must
run ‘apt-get autoremove’ periodically to clean up the old images, and
that kernel images installed prior to some version of apt will still
have to be removed manually.

This report concerns only the situation of Gary Shook, that is now
resolved by other means. No bug was identified hence this is marked
invalid. If you are unwilling to file a new bug report there is not
much that will be done to assist you.

That's 160 MB of Archives. So do I simply delete all but the most recent Archive to free up space? Save the Archive from June28 and delete the rest?

If that is the answer, HOW do I delete those old Archives? Can't see a way to inside the BOOT folder. There's no option to delete files there.
