John: to what degree are the indicator-messaging->IM statuae intended to be omni-present, in the case that:
(a) no application is running that can drive them?
(b) no application is installed that can drive them?
(On the distro side, 'ubuntu-desktop' depends on Empathy, and that by removing 'ubuntu-desktop' it is by definition non-standard and a less critical issue unless it becomes relevent for say Ubuntu Business Desktop. So, for the moment this is more of an upstream Ayatana/Unity Design policy question).
