I submitted this bug as a papercut. I am not sure how difficult this is to sort out. However, if it is possible, I think this is a relatively small bug (from my non-programmer point of view) that would help a lot with Ubuntu's usability. Right now, indicator-applet-session is very baffling (and I say this as 7-year mandrake/slackware/debian/ubuntu veteran), as it just does not work the way I believe the vast majority of people expect it to work, mostly because of this bug.
In that sense, it is not a new feature, as it can't possibly be argued that the menu only works if you want to go offline but not the other way around.
