Haha - spoke too soon. Just logged in to post here and thought I'd better check it one last time.... it failed. There was the usual process running but no GUI appeared, I killed it and now it works again so, no, this hasn't gone away.

Feel free to ask for any help on this - I'll happily sit here running backtraces and installing patches ;)
