I've picked up this as well in /var/log/cups/error_log :

E [26/Jul/2011:03:07:37 +0200] Unable to remove temporary file "/var/spool/cups/tmp/.hplip" - Is a directory
E [26/Jul/2011:03:07:49 +0200] Unable to remove temporary file "/var/spool/cups/tmp/.hplip" - Is a directory

This seems to actually cause cups to stop running under certain conditions.
