From <System> <about Ubuntu> menus
Ubuntu 9.04 - the Jaunty Jackalope
Several things occurred during this time.
An update to the kernel to which I do not attribute the fix.
paul@elsa:~$ uname -a
Linux elsa 2.6.28-14-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Sat Jul 25 01:19:55 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux
"Delete" printer from <System> <Administration><Printing> menus.
Downloaded and ran command from Terminal window...
sh hplip-3.9.6b.run
Program reported error about not finding python-devel
Went to..
<System> <Administration><Synaptic Package Manager>
and installed all python-dev-????? for any version of python loaded.
re-ran from Terminal window...
sh hplip-3.9.6b.run
which than worked correctly all the way through.
This program eventually requires a "re-start" or removal of usb cord.
Did restart and ran "hp-setup" from Terminal window as requested by program after restart.
Program does not find USB port with associated printer.
(Note: overriding by finding USB port via command "lsusb" and entering directly did not work)
Went to menus <System> <Administration><Printing>
Added new printer by clicking on <New> icon
Found printer immediately, added it and driver and printed test page correctly.
My HP B9180 printer is working now.
