Bug Description

Binary package hint: hplip

:~$ uname -a
Linux elsa 2.6.28-13-generic #45-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jun 30 22:12:12 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 9.04
Release: 9.04

error from Printer Configuration - localhost
Printer Properties - 'Photosmart_Pro_B91000' on localhost
Printer worked when updating to Jaunty from 2 previous versions.
Installed new hard drive and installed Jaunty directly from amd64 Jaunty disk.
I have reloaded cups, foomatic and hp programs from Synaptic.
Having seen this error on Google since 2008, tried to apply differing answer from there.

Printer troubleshooter output is included as well.

Installed hp-check and resolved all conflict form its output.

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

My HP B9180 printer is working now.

From <System> <about Ubuntu> menus
Ubuntu 9.04 - the Jaunty Jackalope

Several things occurred during this time.
An update to the kernel to which I do not attribute the fix.

paul@elsa:~$ uname -a
Linux elsa 2.6.28-14-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Sat Jul 25 01:19:55 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

"Delete" printer from <System> <Administration><Printing> menus.

Downloaded and ran command from Terminal window...
sh hplip-3.9.6b.run

Program reported error about not finding python-devel
Went to..
<System> <Administration><Synaptic Package Manager>
and installed all python-dev-????? for any version of python loaded.

re-ran from Terminal window...
sh hplip-3.9.6b.run
which than worked correctly all the way through.
This program eventually requires a "re-start" or removal of usb cord.
Did restart and ran "hp-setup" from Terminal window as requested by program after restart.
Program does not find USB port with associated printer.
(Note: overriding by finding USB port via command "lsusb" and entering directly did not work)

Went to menus <System> <Administration><Printing>
Added new printer by clicking on <New> icon
Found printer immediately, added it and driver and printed test page correctly.

I was finally able to successfully install my new HP printer and have it work.

I believe this should be higher priority, printing is an essential functionnality, and this printer (HP Laserjet P1005 ) is brand new!

Also fixed HP Laserjet 1020
