sudo dpkg-reconfigure python-msn simply told me that 'python-msn' was not installed. I installed it, and there was no change.
The only way I can sometimes persuade MSN to connect is to kill telepathy-butterfly and try again. It works sometimes.
Pidgin is very reliable - though trying to use both Pidgin and Empathy sometimes upsets Pidgin, and leads to lockouts sometimes due to failed login attempts (I had this with Yahoo tonight).
