I'd vote for "alternative approach" from comment #15 - this allows us to add new options later (e.g. friends):
"Show notifications for:
 [ ] Mentions
 [ ] Replies
 [ ] From all friends
 [ ] From mutual friends
 [ ] Foo
 [ ] Bar"
