Bug Description
Binary package hint: grub
Ubuntu 8.04, i386, alternate install CD.
I upgraded from Ubuntu 7.10 to 8.04. I used alternate CD, I upgraded from working 7.10 that was up and running. I inserted CD with 8.04 and upgrade was offered to me and I accepted it. Upgrade took long time but after several hours system was finally upgraded. After reboot I saw updated grub menu and when I selected default option, I met kernel panic after several seconds.
After investigation I found that initrd line was missing in /boot/grub/menu.lst in new records for 8.04
state of menu.lst after upgrade, notice missing initrd line in 2.6.24-16-generic records:
title Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-16-generic
root (hd0,5)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-
quiet
savedefault
title Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-16-generic (recovery mode)
root (hd0,5)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-
title Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.22-14-generic
root (hd0,5)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-
initrd /boot/initrd.
quiet
savedefault
title Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.22-14-generic (recovery mode)
root (hd0,5)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-
initrd /boot/initrd.
title Ubuntu 8.04, memtest86+
root (hd0,5)
kernel /boot/memtest86
quiet
I added line with initrd and problem is fixed. An example:
title Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-16-generic
root (hd0,5)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-
initrd /boot/initrd.
quiet
savedefault
This is a critical bug for new Linux users they cannot recover from my point of view... I am not sure if this bug is in grub package or in other package.

Hi psl,
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and help to improve Ubuntu.
Can you tell me whether /boot/initrd- 2.6.24- 16-generic exists on your system? The only case I see where update-grub would fail to add the initrd line to menu.lst is if the initrd itself doesn't exist for some reason.
