I'm experiencing this same problem. I can't install Ubuntu 18.04 or Kubuntu 18.04. The installer crashes, or reports that grub cannot be installed and then crashes.

Same problem. The installer crashes at random points during installation.

Look like it might have something to do with UEFI? I am running on a Dell system.
Possible duplicate of Bug #1765562 and Bug #1753134?

I think it is not related to UEFI...
It is related to GPT disk type.

Beacuse my friend installed in uefi mode but it doesn't have gpt disk type. The one another reason of this bug to relate to GPT beacuse installer crashing in my virtual machine too(which also have gpt).

Found out for me, that if GNOME uses scaling 200% the installer crashed at loading of the images which say Welcome to Ubuntu, etc. Try using a 100% DISPLAY scaling and no issues during installing.

I hope this info helps someone.

Thank you, Kevin. It helped.

I can confirm that the display scale setting "200%" causes a crash in ubiquity. I have a 4K display. The first thing I do after Ubuntu boots from Live USB is to adjust the scale factor to 200%. The installer crashed at every attempt. It worked only after I left the scale at 100%.

Ummm... => the X.org powered 18.04 does not support fractional display scaling?
Or am I missing anything?

Running into the same problem with both Ubuntu and Kubuntu on an older HP 8200 Elite SFF. Core i5 2400 box. Have set the blank SSD to IDE and ACHI mode, used defaults in Rufus to create the USB stick for installation. The display that is attached is a 1080p screen. So, I don't think it is a scaling issue, which shouldn't affect GRUB installation anyway. Thoughts on what I can change in the UEFI on the box?
