Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-voice-control

Hi,

While adding the VoiceControl icon to the GNOME panel, the following message appears :
Le tableau de bord a rencontré un problème lors du chargement de « OAFIID:GNOME_VoiceControlApplet ».
could be translated by:
The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_VoiceControlApplet".

And no icon can be then seen on the panel.

Please tell me if you need additionnal information.

Using Ubuntu 8.04 up-to-date, gnome-volume-panel 0.2-0ubuntu5 .

Hello,

The attached patch should fix this bug. The problem was in the automake call, which regenerated Makefile.am, while it should use the one provided by the upstream.

Additionaly, it fixes the bug 150745 [1], by not deleting gnome-doc-utils.make in the clean process.

Sounds like a good fix to have. Ack from motu-release, but sponsors please
take a close look at the correctness of the fix as I know zip about Gnome.

The patch is not working for me : I applied the patch following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuPackagingGuide/BuildFromDebdiff , I installed the patched version (0.2-0ubuntu6), and I still have the same error message when adding Voice Control to the panel.

Here is the updated debdiff. The change which was introduced in the 0.2-0ubuntu2 version was lost somewhere in the middle (libexecdir variable), but not documented in the changelog, and I missed that when looking at the 0.2-0ubuntu5.

slasher-fun, could you test with the new debdiff? Thanks.

This one is working: I have now the voice control in the panel. (It remains on "calibration" when I start the speech recognition but I think this might be considered as another bug :-)

slasher-fun, I suppose it would be another bug, as I get "Init" ->
"Calibration" -> "Ready" when I start it, and I'm sure it's not
related to this one. This one was the problem in the build sequence.

What comes to my mind is that it might be a packaging bug. It is not
depending on some gstreamer packages, while it should (I suppose).
Please check if you have installed gstreamer plugins
(gstreamer0.10-plugins-{bad,base,good,ugly}). Anyway, if you keep
hanging on "Calibration", file it as a separate bug.

Thanks :).

I finally managed to fix this other bug : when recording with Audacity, it appeared than only the left channel was recorded. After some changes in the volume mixer, Audacity recorded then both left and right channel, and Voice Control has now its normal behavior (Init -> Calibration -> Ready).

However, I've got no idea how to install it, since I'm not installing gnome-voice-control from the sources.

Could you help ?

Here is the patch for version in intrepid. It's the same as the one for Hardy, with distribution and version change for intrepid in debian/changelog.

The current fix can't be uploaded to Hardy, before it's uploaded to Intrepid. I'll prepare a Stable Release Update bug report, once this one is uploaded to Intrepid.

Tried the patch. Re-compiled AMD64 applet now loads, but seems to be stuck in calibration. Judging by the developers help file comments, it may not be too big a loss if it doesn't work correctly. It's apparently early in development.

Anybody know of another way to control Gnome for someone with neurological upper extremity handicaps?

Keyboarding is what's difficult. Mousing is okay, but I'm overusing my right hand. Already had bilateral carpal tunnel surgery, right hand first, but more nerves involved now. I hate to complain, but I'm looking for a way to overcome a what could be a permanent and perhaps worsening condition. Certain vendors specialize in providing modified interfaces, but not for Linux as far as I know.

I found Dasher, which is part of the Gnome Desktop. It installs by default in Ubuntu 8.04 and can be found under System>Preferences>Assistive Technologies. Dasher offers good potential for people with motion disabilities. So disregard my previous post please. I probably should have posed my question on Ubuntu Forums in the first place.

For the rest of you looking for alternative text entry methods, Dasher actually looks much more promising than any voice recognition software I've tried before under another nameless OS.

Misinformation Alert!

Dasher is NOT installed by default. It is easily installed via Synaptic.

Hello,

I have uploaded gnome-voice-control for Gutsy and Hardy that solve these issues to my PPA [1], until they are published as stable release updates (see bug 252424 for Gutsy [2] and bug 252418 for Hardy [3]). The versions are OK, so once SRU's are published to primary Ubuntu archives, the versions from my PPA will be replaced with the usual update.
