In 'Preferences/Scrolling' preferences tab of gnome-terminal, the option 'Scrollbar is' allows to set which side of gnome-terminal the scrollbar will be displayed.
With overlay scrollbar, setting it to 'On left-side' makes the scrollbar vanish.
