Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-session

If i start gnome with beryl/compiz enabled from gdm with a .desktop that calls one of the following scripts:

Either compiz:

#!/bin/sh

# Compiz startup script!

compiz --replace gconf &
gtk-window-decorator --replace &

exec gnome-session

or beryl

#!/bin/sh
exec beryl&
exec emerald &
#sleep 1
exec gnome-session

All the programs that get invoked through gnome-session (update-notifier, gossip, evo-a-n, g-p-m, bt-download, g-v-m --sm-disable, beagled, nm-applet --sm-disable) startup with a delay of roundabout 2 minutes and evo-a-n crashes (looks similar to #66860).

This happens on different edgy installations. gnome-session: 2.16.1-0ubuntu1

On feisty there is no need of such hack to start compiz, desktop-effects can be used by example. Marking low importance since that happens when you do some custom hack apparently which is not a standard usecase. To be confirmed by somebody else and forwarded upstream if that happens on feisty

Changed in gnome-session:
assignee: nobody → desktop-bugs
importance: Undecided → Low

Happening on Feisty, will send people to this bug

I'm running compiz through the ubuntu wiki instructions I would have said so I don't think it is a matter of nonstandard usage

Any files needed to help?

I removed all traces of compiz and reinstalled using the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CompizOnFeisty?highlight=%28compiz%29

Have seen no benefit

I can confirm this in Feisty, using compiz 0.36 from the gandalf repository. I don't use any custom scripts to start compiz either.

I can confirm this on Feisty as well!
It's very annoying since I've got to wait 2 minutes for using startup apps like the network-manager applet or Avant Window Navigator (very useful together with Compiz).

@Sebastien: I think you should mark this at least as Medium importance, since all I've done is enable Desktop Effects, install the gnome-compiz-manager package (available on the Universe repo) and click on the "Save the current session" button.

Marking this bug as Confirmed.

Anyway, I think the problem is in this process:
/usr/bin/compiz.real --no-fbo --ignore-desktop-hints --sm-client-id default0 gconf gconf
(It's the process "sleeping" for 2-3 minutes on startup)
By the way, now I have TWO of these processes on my session.

Also, right-clicking on the desktop in the "sleeping-time", the GNOME Splash Screen shows up (freezed).
Sometimes, the whole desktop become unusable, so I have to log in again.

Could anybody describe simple steps to trigger the bug from a feisty installation?

I am experiencing the same thing with Compiz. The Desktop Effects applet sucks, it hardly gives any options (well, 2 to be precise), that's not an excuse to not fix this problem.

I think this should be ramped back up to high priority. Compiz adds a lot more functionality and usability to the computer, and it needs to be supported.

I've had it on gutsy too.
to fix I had to disable desktop effects (no effects)
then go to system> preferences>sessions and click 'remember currently running applications'
and then re-enable desktop effects the next time you log in.

does that make sense?
