I recovered my old Zoom USB modem from the scrap box and tested it on Karmic. It is worse than it ever was, it is not even finding the modem. here is what i did:

1) installed gnome-ppp
2)plugged in USB modem
3)looked at dmesg:
[ 5775.796157] usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 6
[ 5775.916161] usb 2-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71
[ 5778.617516] usb 2-1: configuration #1 chosen from 2 choices
[ 5778.622401] cdc_acm 2-1:1.0: ttyACM4: USB ACM device
which I interpret as a modem at ttyACM4, corrrect?
4)started gnome-ppp from the terminal and clicked connect. this happened:
~$ gnome-ppp
WVCONF: /home/ullix/.wvdial.conf
GNOME PPP: Connecting...
GNOME PPP: STDERR: --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
GNOME PPP: STDERR: --> Cannot open /dev/modem: No such file or directory
GNOME PPP: STDERR: --> Cannot open /dev/modem: No such file or directory
GNOME PPP: STDERR: --> Cannot open /dev/modem: No such file or directory
GNOME PPP: Unable to KILL wvdial process!
5) clicked on Setup, then clicked on Detect (Modem device). Answer: "No modem detected on your system"
6) clicked on the down arrow of Device: it shows /dev/modem, /dev/ttyS0...S3, /dev/USB0 ...USB3 but no /dev/ttyACM

this is what the terminal says, when I click on Detect:
~$ gnome-ppp
WVCONF: /home/ullix/.wvdial.conf
GNOME PPP: STDOUT: Editing `/dev/null'.
GNOME PPP: STDERR: Modem Port Scan<*1>: S0 S1 S2 S3 ACM0 ACM1 ACM2 ACM3
