Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-ppp

USB modem is recognized by intrepid ubuntu-desktop installation, but when attempting to connect with gnome-ppp I get the messages:
--> PPP negotiation detected.
--> Unable to run /usr/sbin/pppd.
--> Check permissions, or specify a "PPPD Path" option in wvdial.conf.

and cannot connect. Have default installation and all updates up to today.

uname -a: Linux cy810 2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP Fri Oct 24 06:42:44 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

Well, the action on this bug report wasn't exactly overwhelming ...

In the meantime I discovered how I can get the modem to work by brute force, but someone more competent than me needs to change this into something presentable! It seems to be solely an issue of file permissions.

what I did: changed those files/directories to mode 777:

 /etc/ppp/chap-secrets
 /etc/ppp/pap-secrets
 /etc/ppp/peers/
 /etc/ppp/peers/wvdial
 /etc/ppp/peers/wvdial-pipe

after the change, this is what it looks like :

-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 96 2008-12-19 22:21 chap-secrets
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1754 2008-10-16 03:50 ip-down

please, do make this properly!

uname -a :
Linux extensa5220 2.6.27-10-generic #1 SMP Fri Nov 21 12:00:22 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

modem:
USB modem: Zoom 56k USB Modem, series 1063, model 3095, from Zoom Technologies Inc, ~$35
The modem is quite small - about the size of a very small mouse - so for those travelling into and/or living in the DSL diaspora, this is a nice piece of hardware.

Just a note. This isn't peculiar to the Zoom modem. I've gotten it it with the Intel 536ep as well. In fact, just about an hour ago with a fresh installation of 8.10 with a 2.26.27-7 kernel.

It works.

Now, how to make it work as user?

I am not at home now, but have the laptop with me and using Juanty in
WiFi locations.

When I return home I'll load Ubuntu 9.10 and try gnome-ppp again.

Hi Marc,

I have not been using the dial-up modem so don't know.

Can't even check at the moment as I have lent my laptop to my son.

The following warnings are normal, do not affect running gnome-ppp as a normal user, and can be ignored:

--> Warning: Could not modify /etc/ppp/pap-secrets: Permission denied
--> --> PAP (Password Authentication Protocol) may be flaky.
--> Warning: Could not modify /etc/ppp/chap-secrets: Permission denied
--> --> CHAP (Challenge Handshake) may be flaky.

Are you both having problems even when ignoring those error messages?

I recovered my old Zoom USB modem from the scrap box and tested it on Karmic. It is worse than it ever was, it is not even finding the modem. here is what i did:

1) installed gnome-ppp
2)plugged in USB modem
3)looked at dmesg:
[ 5775.796157] usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 6
[ 5775.916161] usb 2-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71
[ 5778.617516] usb 2-1: configuration #1 chosen from 2 choices
[ 5778.622401] cdc_acm 2-1:1.0: ttyACM4: USB ACM device
which I interpret as a modem at ttyACM4, corrrect?
4)started gnome-ppp from the terminal and clicked connect. this happened:
~$ gnome-ppp
WVCONF: /home/ullix/.wvdial.conf
GNOME PPP: Connecting...
GNOME PPP: STDERR: --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
GNOME PPP: STDERR: --> Cannot open /dev/modem: No such file or directory
GNOME PPP: STDERR: --> Cannot open /dev/modem: No such file or directory
GNOME PPP: STDERR: --> Cannot open /dev/modem: No such file or directory
GNOME PPP: Unable to KILL wvdial process!
5) clicked on Setup, then clicked on Detect (Modem device). Answer: "No modem detected on your system"
6) clicked on the down arrow of Device: it shows /dev/modem, /dev/ttyS0...S3, /dev/USB0 ...USB3 but no /dev/ttyACM

this is what the terminal says, when I click on Detect:
~$ gnome-ppp
WVCONF: /home/ullix/.wvdial.conf
GNOME PPP: STDOUT: Editing `/dev/null'.
GNOME PPP: STDERR: Modem Port Scan<*1>: S0 S1 S2 S3 ACM0 ACM1 ACM2 ACM3
GNOME PPP: STDOUT:
GNOME PPP: STDERR: ttyACM4<Info>: Device or resource busy
GNOME PPP: STDOUT: Scanning your serial ports for a modem.
GNOME PPP: STDERR: Modem Port Scan<*1>: ACM4
GNOME PPP: STDOUT:
GNOME PPP: STDOUT:
GNOME PPP: STDOUT:
GNOME PPP: STDOUT: Sorry, no modem was detected! Is it in use by another program?
GNOME PPP: STDOUT: Did you configure it properly with setserial?
GNOME PPP: STDOUT:
GNOME PPP: STDOUT: Please read the FAQ at http://open.nit.ca/wiki/?WvDial
GNOME PPP: STDOUT:
GNOME PPP: STDOUT: If you still have problems, send mail to <email address hidden>.

@ullix: in karmic, you need to uninstall the "modemmanager" package, as it ties up the serial ports it finds. If you could uninstall that and reboot and try again, please.

I tried my Zoom USB modem on another computer with a Lucid install.

Had to install gnome-ppp.
Pluggin in the modem: dmesg showed it as
[10818.910199] usb 5-2: configuration #1 chosen from 2 choices
[10818.912543] cdc_acm 5-2:1.0: ttyACM0: USB ACM device

then starting gnome-ppp: had to Detect the modem in the setup, and it immediately detected it. But it is NOT listed in the drop-down box. Oddly enough, it is shown as an analog modem, not a USB modem.

Tried to make a few dial-ins: none would work, but the log seems to indicate taht it would have connected if it could. It could not, because I am now on a VOIP phone line, and those numbers are blocked or don't work for technical reasons.

Can't tell whether it worked, but did not see strange messages on lacking permissions and such.

Behaves the same way as described above for the Lucid install: appears to be working, but I can't say for sure as my phone system apperently does not allow such calls any more.

I did not understand. Frustrated, i went back to Ubuntu 9.04
