I have experienced this as well, across both Kubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 on a Dell Inspiron 5100. Under 8.04 the workaround used inhttp://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-346225.html functioned adequately; updated the reference to /etc/acpi/sleepbtn.sh keeps it functioning now.
