Bug Description

Hi

Slab (opensuse gnome's new menu) has built it support for recently used applications, but currently it doesn't work since it needs to patch both gnome-panel and gnome-desktop so they create an xml file with this applications. I think this is the best thing this menu offers and since there's a spec which states that ubuntu may offer this panel in main as an alternative to the current 3 menu panel, I think this would be a nice addition.

the patch could be easily take from opensuse, here's a post explaining how to do it:

http://anniyan.wordpress.com/2006/08/08/gnome-main-menu-062-recently-used-apps/

I'll post here direct links to opensuse's patches.

This affects also gnome-dekstop, should I open a bug there aswell?

Thanks

Hi, wrong link:

These pathes seem to work against lastest stable gnome 2.16.1 so maybe ubuntu could integrate them in next release.

thanks

I don't know. There was a request for slab's inclusion in gnome 2.18 but AFAIK it's not probable. That's all I know.

Hi

When filling gnome's bugzilla I cloned one of my bug report in order to track it on both packages (since the patches are needed in both gnome-dekstop and gnome-panel), is that the correct way to do so? I want to know if comments added to a bug report will be reported on both. For the mean time today I've added a comment on both reports about the links to the patches. Maybe I sould also post a comment with a link to the original bug report (here in launchpad)?

thanks

Sebastien > the bug that I reported there was about wine under gnome. (***)
Under Feisty > I do yesterday a fresh install and wine don't kill Nautilius
desktop on my tests [ so let's forget about if all is OK - let say the bug
is gone ] - anyway Kmon did not understand - my message was : I need
support for wine to work OK under Gnome, let's find the problem.

I dont' know too much about GTK and gnome internals - I am a web designer /
programmer [ javascript - actionscript - php - sql syntax / corel - adobe -
xara - fireworks ], I'm not yet a gtk guy but I am capable to understand
the main line.

on PHP if I have a main loop for example I can decide inside if a function
can have acces to some objects defined by other class ( ..can break another
function / loop or not ) or not .. on other words I can tell to script: "U
can't stop dbus / X / hal because u'r not so important to do that".
I guess under gnome [ gtk ] must be a similar way.. If not - then we must do
something on that direction.

Also : *support for recently used applications*

what means that - r*ecently used applications* ? - for me = support for Wine
- ..to be clear I understand I need support for Wine on Ubuntu for apps'
that I use on my industry [ flash8, fireworks8, dreamweaver8, corel draw
X3, photoshop CS ].

To understand this point : think about all east european countries wich use
Corel Draw (.cdr) as their main DTP format - instead of Adobe Illustrator
(ai, ps, eps, pdf ) - why - because is better - is time savior - has an
ultra customizable interface ( that mean speed ) - superior usability -
perfect tools for rasters or vectors - perfect print preview settings - pdf
perfect export - VBS ideal for repetitive tasks - huge range of export
formats - multiple pages per document - ICM - spot colors - linked text
frames ( as on Xpress, Page Maker, InDesign, Ventura, Scribus ).

Photoshop - a litlle bit better than Corel Photopaint - is master of western
DTP industry.
Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks - masters of web design / development - ( all
on a single Studio pack )

Now make the connections - 2 companies > Adobe and Corel == lot of milions
of Web and DTP professionals wich can see Linux as an opportunity ( for me
XP is 200 ..not too much ..for a little / medium printer with 25 computers
the sum is about 5000 .. for a big print house can be a lot more - only for
OS - also think about network problems under XP wich work verry strange on
a bigger network ). Is a very oriented industry here( with clear wishes
and goals ), not Joe Doe wich like to have support for music / videos /
emails / games / documents ( 4 from 5 problems are already solved pretty
well on Ubuntu and other Linux distributions ).

So working for Linux cause, I work for my industry cause, wich is a huge
one.

Unfortunately my time is limited. I dont have time to understand answers
like : "...the problem you report has nothing to do with this bug, please
file a new one", because *support for recently used applications -* mean
support for Wine for me and nothing else.

Sorry from my s...

Hi nemes

This bus is about a feature nautilus has in opensuse. The feature is related to the new applet slab which is a replacement for gnome main menu. On of the features of this new menu is a placeholder for recently used applications launched from nautilus and/or the gnome panel (launchers). It has nothing to do with wine. It's a feature that will show recently launched apps in the menu, not specific to wine.

I was suggesting that since the issues you are addresing are related to wine and not to nautilus/slab/gnome-panel you should open a new bug report instead of adding comments here. This way is more efficient for developers to triage bug and fix them.

I hope this clears my comments.

thanks

Hi

It seems gnome 2.18 won't include this patches.

According to this spec:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SlabMenuForDesktop ubuntu is considering including this menu applet on main so people can install it at their own choice. I think it's a great idea, but without this patches one of the best things the menu provides is missing, so I would say to apply them if it's going to be included.

The patch are non trivial and Vincent has a point about it on the upstream bug, we will probably wait next cycle to get those used, slab will not be the default menu anyway, just an option

Upstream wants to deprecate gnome-desktop in the near future. The patch for it looks pretty straightforward. The worst case, if this is included, would probably be that if Gnome takes another approach in a future release and that then the old recent application list might not be read anymore after an upgrade. (Which is not really a problem IMHO.) In the mean time this could work for Gutsy users with gnome-main-menu installed.

I did not yet review the gnome-panel patch, though and I will test both patches in the course of next week. Maybe it could be included then, if the patch to gnome-panel also boils down to be quite minimal and straightforward. But IANAUD.

Those patches probably aren't enough. I suspect a bug in main-menu or slab, which prevents the list to be read correctly (i.e. the xbel looks fine to me, but the recent applications are not showing up in the menu as the list is empty from main-menu's point of view).

Philipp Kern (pkern) wrote :

The list of recently-used applications is properly written (although I had a single entry which was not prefixed with `file://', the application browser launched by main-menu; other applications launched through it are saved correctly). I also confirmed this with a test program using GtkRecentManager and retrieving the items. But somehow they get lost between slab and main-menu and debugging of applets is not that easy IMHO.
