PROBLEM SORTED OUT
apt-get upgrade seems to have sorted out the problem.
I have no idea how it did it but the logout is now instantaneous.
However, it is still early so let's do some more testing.
Yep, it seems to work fine now. So apt-get upgrade (not update) seems to have sorted out this problem.
But many more issues to sort out but they are for another bug report.
