Using "Upgrade Manager" to do online upgrade from 9.10 Karmic to 10.04 Lucid on Sat 2010-05-01.
Same problem - Volume Control icon disappears. Took finding this thread to solve problem. Very annoying to take an entire weekend looking for a solution.
