I can confirm that the Sound Recorder does not work on a clean install of Ubuntu 14.04 x86 on a Dell laptop.

As a workaround I installed Audio Recorder from https://launchpad.net/~osmoma/+archive/audio-recorder

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:osmoma/audio-recorder
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install audio-recorder
