Charlie,

It wasn't the drive that was causing the problem. It was an external USB
drive which I disconnected and the problem continues.

While I've spent my entire adult life working on computers, it wasn't on
Linux or Unix. At least not in the depth that I was on DEC hardware and
software. If you can outline a step by step procedure for me to back up my
9.04 system to an external hard drive and to restore from it if necessary.
I'll consider upgrading to 10.10 and testing with it.
