Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-games

Ubuntu 9.04 - the Jaunty Jackalope

sudoku:

  Candidate: 1.0.1-3

Sometimes after the game sits idle for a while, if you double-click a square, it doesn't display the numbers for you to choose one. The square does indicate it's been selected, but that's about all.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: amd64
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04
NonfreeKernelModules: fglrx
Package: gnome-games 1:2.26.1-0ubuntu2
ProcEnviron:
 LANG=en_US.UTF-8

SourcePackage: gnome-games
Uname: Linux 2.6.28-13-generic x86_64

Pedro,

Thanks for the response. Having performed software maintenance in the past
myself, I appreciate the difficulty that this type of problem presents. I
don't know how to reproduce the problem. I'll attempt to gather information
about additional symptoms the next time it occurs.

I do have other things going on with my system that have some impact on the
problem. I have a bad disk drive that continually resetting. The X window
system dies once or twice a week with nothing in the messages log. I don't
know if these problems or related or not.

There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test the current Ubuntu development version (10.10). If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect 399747, and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Were you able to determine if this was caused by the hardware drive failure? If so, there is no need to upload updated logs.

Thanks in advance.

Charlie,

It wasn't the drive that was causing the problem. It was an external USB
drive which I disconnected and the problem continues.

While I've spent my entire adult life working on computers, it wasn't on
Linux or Unix. At least not in the depth that I was on DEC hardware and
software. If you can outline a step by step procedure for me to back up my
9.04 system to an external hard drive and to restore from it if necessary.
I'll consider upgrading to 10.10 and testing with it.

Thanks for responding. It is not really necessary to install Maverick (which will become 10.10) to test with it. You can download the latest ISO image, and use the live CD to run Maverick for a test. That way it will not install anything on your current system and save you the possible problems associated with trying to backup, install something else, and then restore what you already had. Simply download from http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . After burning to a cd, you can restart with the cd in the drive and choose "try without installing" when asked. Do not allow it to install. This will give you the actual development environment to test in, without touching the already installed and working version you have.

Thanks for helping with this. It really is greatly appreciated.

Charlie,

I burned the CD using InfraRecorder on Windows Vista and tried booting it.
It came up and said "No init found. Try passing init= bootarg."

Sorry, I have no clue as to how to proceed.

Charlie,

Since I booted that Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meercat CD, when I get an Update
notice and I try to perform the updates, it wants me to mount the Maverick
Meercat CD. Obviously it wrote something on my disk that is now affecting
my updates. How do I fix this?

I am sorry you are having that difficulty. You can edit the /etc/apt/sources.list file as follows:

Please be very careful doing this.
1. open a terminal window - Applciations -> Accessories -> Terminal
2. type without quotes "cd /etc/apt" and hit ENTER
3. type without quotes "sudo mousepad /etc/apt/sources.list" and hit ENTER
4. Add a # in front of lines starting with "deb cdrom: " (without the quotes)
5. Left-click File, left-click Save
6. Close mousepad by clicking in the upper right corner.

It should not ask for the cd again

Charlie,

Thanks for your help.

It didn't work at first. I didn't have mousepad installed. I installed
that and we'll see
what happens.

Any idea why the CD doesn't come up as indicated? It seems to be missing an
init
file.
