Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

I'm using currently-updated Intrepid on amd64, and the volume control applet in Gnome doesn't seem to work as it used to.

Usually, I: click on the volume icon, adjust the volume, and then click somewhere else to go back to work. When I click elsewhere, the drop-down volume bar goes away.

In the current volume applet, this doesn't happen: the drop-down volume bar stays until I click the applet icon again. I'd like the old behavior, where it goes away semi-automatically when I'm done adjusting the volume.

I have gnome-applets 2.23.92-0ubuntu1.

upstream said that's not a bug

"The change in behaviour was deliberate - the idea was to make it work the same
way as other "dock" windows like the calendar and the investment applet. I'm
not going to change it back in the short term, but I am willing to be persuaded
to change the behaviour back for 2.25. Whether I change it back will depend on
reaction to the new version, so you feedback is useful."

Upstream changed it from Won't fix to Unconfirmed. The summary of the bug has changed a little bit, though. Changing it here too.

Hmm. How about Nework Manager Applet? That currently closes when the popup window is clicked outside. You would have to change a lot of the panel plugins to make this consistent. I could see how a user might want to have the Calendar stay open but a volume slider control? This seems to be a step backwards in UI consistency. There has to be a benefit to warrant changing existing functionality.

To me, this was a very noticeable change to the UI in 8.10. I prefer having the volume slider disappear when focus is lost. Changing volume is a one-time ordeal -- when the sound needs adjustment, I click the volume icon and change the volume to a more comfortable level. I'm done using the control until I decide it needs to be changed again.

If this is an upstream choice, it's a very very BAD choice! This worked very well in Ubuntu 8.04.1, and now in Ibex it isn't comfortable to use. If developers wouldn't like to fix this, give a workaround or an option to restore the old functionality.
If developers change everything familiar function what the users using everyday, the things are going the wrong way with gnome...
Thanks!

please change it back or tell us a good way to make the sound slider go away. this is just really annoying. the UI should become transparent when the user is done using that feature. it shouldn't stick around like a sore thumb.

I agree with most others, it's annoying to have to click icon again to make the volume disappear - it's really bugging me..

It's being considered by the upstream authors now: "A redesign is being planned, look for a prototype in 2.25.2. If it doesn't work out we'll head back to the 2.22 design for 2.26." So it will be fixed, thanks for the comments, btw you can track the progress of the issue at: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=553249 ; thanks again.

About that volume control applet, when you move the mouse on the applet and change the volume with the help of the mouse wheel (so without clicking on the applet to make the slider appearing), do you have the tooltip with the volume percent value appearing ?
Since I'm using Interpid, that tooltip appears only as in usual case: leaving the mouse steady on the control some time. I think useful to be informed of the percent value as soon as it changed without having to wait for some time when the slider is not appearing.

Hovering the mouse over the applet icon shows a tool-tip, scrolling the mouse (actually laptop touchpad) causes the volume to change as expected (the tooltip is updated when I "scroll").

Does the tooltip appear as soon as you scroll or have you to hover the mouse over the applet icon ?
With Feisty I did not have to hover and so avoid to interrupt what I was doing.

Move mouse over icon, wait one second, tooltip pops up, e.g. "Master: 84%", then scroll to change volume.

OK, thanks for your answer. I preferred when we did ot have to wait a second.

Oh, I didn't know that this was reported already, just got referred here by a duplicate. Regarding the name: is this still about the gnome volume applet or about the gnome panel? The title is confusing (non-native speakers like me could wonder what "dangle" means :)), maybe we should clear up what the bug is really about because there is 2 things:

1) some people might want the volume applet to autohide but not the calendar
2) some people are more concerned about the situation when the panel autohides

Could we clear this up? If this is about auto-hiding the panel, then it's not really a duplicate of bug 279462.
