I'm not exactly clear what you mean by purging and settings removal. I've run uninstall with the proprietary driver (and rebooted) I've used nvidia-driver-396 and apt-cache remove --purge'd that. I've tried to video cards now. In short, I've tried everything I can think of, but still end up with the same problem.
