After some upgrade/update my laptop (Sony VGN-SZ750N) stopped starting the graphical interface. For a couple of days I simply logged in, said "startx", and started working. After about five minutes, the graphical login would show up, interrupting what I was doing.

So I decided to investigate, and I discovered that reverting the patch discussed here fixes my problem.
