Bug Description

Binary package hint: gconf-editor

The key-type icon in gconf-editor are outdated, ugly and don't fit in, however I do feel as though they convey their message well, so they just need a little updating.

Here is a debdiff for jaunty, replacing the current icons, with Tango-styled icons, but with the same symbols, as I feel as though they already convey their meaning fine.

thank you for your bug report, could you add a screenshot showing the difference? that seems rather a change which should be in the icon theme than in the software

unsubscribing the sponsor team for now, that seems a non trivial delta for no real win and those icons should rather be added to the icon theme

This does most certainly *does* have a win.

When a new user uses the LiveCD, most often they look through all the menus first, when they see an ugly icon like the one on gnome-pilot, it makes Ubuntu itself look lagging behind, like things haven't been updated. Also it makes it look unprofessional, have really out of the place icons.

The patch that I have given, makes the menu icon use the generic scanner icon from the current gtk icon theme or fall back on the gnome-icon-theme.

This has the advantage of given the 'PDA Devices' menu entry looking in place (ie. tango icon styled) and not look outdated. Also, if the user then changes the icon theme, this changes accordingly, if the icon theme has a scanner icon.

Although ideally, we should also change the application icons (ie. the ones that the software uses for about dialog etc.), this is a first step towards replacing them.

Therefore I shall subscribe the ubuntu-main-sponsors again, and would ask that either

my patch is added into the package

or

the new upstream version is packaged (if that becomes stable and get's released in time)

Ignore all above!!!

I am going to have to disagree with you there Sebastian. I feel as though these icons should not be packaged in the icon theme.

gconf-editor is the only application to use these icons, and so unnecessary ones should not be included in the icon theme. I believe that is why gconf-editor did this in the past, and why it still does it, therefore I have replaced them with tango-style icons, just as all gnome programs are trying to do with their icons.

I shall try and speak to you and then resolve whether this should be subscribed.

rugby471, can You please provide a screenshot of patched gconf-editor? I'm considering to add this bug to One Hundred Paper Cuts Project (https://launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts), because it's really easy to fix it (the patch exists already), I just want to be sure about results.

Thanks in advance.

I don't think the way I patched it was correct, and so I think if you want to use it for Hundered Papercuts, you should

Use the icons here (not mine but GPLv2):

Wow, these from gnome-look.org looks really good and clean. Definitelly a papercut because:

1. Affects an application which is essential part of GNOME desktop
2. Improves users visual experience a lot
3. Dead simple to fix

This looks like a great change, but seeing as you already have a patch, your bug has been confirmed elsewhere, you do not need help from the Canonical design team, and this bug does not affect most user's default Ubuntu experience, this is not a paper cut.

Please understand, not being a paper cut does not mean this change will not be made. To the contrary, one of the reasons for not including this in the hundredpapercuts project is that it looks like the change can be discussed and made (or not) independently of hundredpapercuts.
