We need more info to troubleshoot the issue.
- Please could you tell us which version of Ubuntu 10.04 you are using? Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?
You can find out by typing "uname -m" in a terminal. If it returns "x86_64", then you're using 64-bit version.

- When launching firefox from the terminal, does it leave any message upon exit?

Can you please check if any message is added to ~/.xsession-errors while Firefox is running?
