I managed to reproduce that behaviour on intrepid, using LANG=sk_SK.UTF-8. The following message is shown multiple times on stderr:
(filezilla:16162): Pango-WARNING **: Invalid UTF-8 string passed to pango_layout_set_text()
At first, I mistakenly tried to reproduce the problem with the sv local instead of sk, and actually the same problem occurs with LANG=sv_FI.UTF-8. So it's possible that other locales are affected as well.
Thanks for reporting this.
