Ok. Could repoduce this on my test system which is running a lubuntu-11.10.iso from the harddisk.

The only difference is in step 7) and 8) to regain a functional desktop:

7) Press Ctrl+Alt+F2
8a) Type: killall file-roller
8b) Press Alt+F7
