Also tested the new version of fglrx-updates 2:8.902-0ubuntu0.1. Still the same problems: Corrupted dialogs, tooltips and dropdowns. Very bad performance (scrolling, animations). With the open driver everything's much smoother (but far from perfect).

I confirm what Romano said: Also can't take screenshots. Because of this, I attached a photo of my screen (corrupted drop down in firefox).

System: Ubuntu Oneiric 64bit with Radeon HD 4290.
