10.4 official ati drivers(ati-driver-installer-10-4-x86.x86_64.run) do not support default 10.4 ubuntu release.
you may see in /var/log/Xorg.0.log

symptoms
fglrxinfo will output
X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
  Major opcode of failed request: 136 (GLX)
  Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)
  Serial number of failed request: 20
  Current serial number in output stream: 20
trying to use opensource drivers for now.
