I have an ATI Radeon™ 9700 (Desktop) card

Compiled the fglrx drivers from intrepid-proposed and also downloaded and installed ati-driver-installer-8-12-x86.x86_64.run

set Driver=fglrx in xorg.conf, and both times after rebooting:
