Waiting another 6 month? That would be a year because Ekiga 3.0 was first planned for 8.04 LTS version: For this one it should be put in the backport short list because LTS users may not want to wait 2 more years!

Concerning Ekiga itself, the interface is much more beautiful and user friendly... but this is a pity ZRTP was removed from 3.0 goals.

But the reason may be : Will ZRTP be the SIP-Crypto standardisation winner? Maybe a custom and implementation easy solution based on SIP ports SSL tunneling should be added (even if not compatible with other SIP clients in this mode) as all this still not show any progress since too many years. Or at least the ability for Ekiga to go through a socks proxy, making it easy for users to use their own tunnelling solution (SSH...).
