Eclipse loses button events with swt-gtk in karmic

Bug Description

Eclipse on Karmic is unusable because buttons rarely respond to button events. Clicking on a button shows the button depressing but nothing happens. The only work around is to click the button so that it gets focus and then to hit the enter key which does actually register. The same eclipse package works fine on 9.04 so it appears to be the gtk implementation of swt or perhaps the gtk library.

Strictly speaking, this is a bug in GTK. A new version of GTK shipped that was meant to be compatible, but instead broke existing applications (at the very least those based on Eclipse). The application use of GTK might (or might not) be considered in some way improper, but practical considerations should be dominant.

Fixing this in GTK will in one step remove the problem in *all* currently impacted applications. Fixing this in Eclipse will only help new and newly updated Eclipse installations. Existing Eclipse-based applications will continue to be impacted until (and if) updated by their respective developers.

Moving this bug to the eclipse package, as it was using an internal implementation of swt-gtk for karmic. Lucid now uses the system swt-gtk: please reassign to swt-gtk or gtk itself if this issue can be reprodued in lucid (depending on the appropriate location for the fix).

affects: swt-gtk (Ubuntu) → eclipse (Ubuntu)

Hi

Based on tarzan23's comment (comment 2), I am closing this as a duplicate of #458703.

However, if you can reproduce this issue in eclipse 3.5.1+repack~1-0ubuntu3 (from karmic-updates), please let us know and we will have a look at it.
